The Port Clinton Republican who proposed a bill to assist Ohio schools with the purchase of technology and to make physical alterations to improve tech infrastructure and school security has reintroduced the measure after last session's bill did not advance past committee.

Rep. Steve Arndt, in House Bill 37, assigns the responsibility to the state's School Facilities Commission, which will be instructed to develop a program to complete the measures.

The bill applies to school districts that have not yet received assistance under the classroom facilities assistance program as of Dec. 31, according to language of the bill.

These schools may apply for and receive state funds to use for technology and physical alterations to improve technology infrastructure or school safety and security.

HB 37 further instructs the commission to adopt specific guidelines and procedures.

In addition to a requirement that a participating district's board of education approve participation in the program by at least of four-fifths vote, the legislation stipulates that any method of determining the amount of funding awards include requirements relating to the state's portion and the district's portion of the project cost.

Participating school districts will become ineligible for the commission's classroom facilities assistance program.

Rep. Theresa Gavarone, R-Bowling Green, signed on as cosponsor of the bill, which was referred to the House Education and Career Readiness Committee for further deliberation.
