Judge Kathryn Michael named for Akron Municipal Court’s presiding judge

AKRON––Judge Kathryn Michael will serve as the administrative/presiding judge of the Akron Municipal Court for 2018.

In this role, Judge Michael will oversee the administration, docket and calendar as well as the observance of the rules of superintendence and the timely reporting and termination of all cases in the court. She previously served as administrative/presiding judge in 2010 and 2013.

Judge Michael was first elected to the bench in 2005 and was re-elected in 2011 and again this past November. She graduated from The University of Akron in 1982 and The University of Akron School of Law in 1986. Prior to becoming a judge, she served our community as a trial attorney, representing individuals and small businesses, as a trained mediator and as a part-time magistrate.

In addition to her caseload, she holds lead roles in two specialized dockets, presiding over Family Intervention Court, a domestic violence specialized docket, and sharing the responsibility of presiding over OVI Court with Judge Annalisa S. Williams.

“This year will be exciting for the Akron Municipal Court, as we are making plans to build a new space for the court, streamline technology and add innovative services. We will continue to serve our community in the best way possible,” said Judge Michael.

A new administrative/presiding judge is chosen for each year.

Judge Michael’s duties in this capacity began January 1, 2018.
