Law firm organization shares cybersecurity threats and info

The legal profession has a unique set of cybersecurity needs that require unique sets of solutions. I do have to say that it would be very difficult to source everything a law firm needs in computer security through a local search.

Law firms looking for help with cybersecurity certainly need more than this column or a google search of local cybersecurity firms. They need the ability to communicate with other law firms and share resources and best practices unmoored from either local solutions or being held captive by security companies or IT.

Enter the Legal Services Information Sharing and Analysis Organization (LS-ISAO: https://grfederation.org/Members-LS-ISAO).

The organization acts as a clearinghouse and network among law firms, government agencies, and key cybersecurity players to expand the abilities of firms to deal with threats.

The organization shares information across its membership of potential threats and solutions, and it does so on the highest level.

These threats aren’t just coming from some 300- pound guy in a basement or from Indonesian hackers anymore. There are worldwide criminal organizations after your data. And there are lots of government actors out there sifting through databases looking for vulnerabilities. Believe me, their hackers are way more sophisticated than your IT department. Sorry to be the one to have to tell you.

Your firm needs big-time help to meet these big-time problems.

The LS-ISAO is tied in to the government agencies that work with large-scale cybersecurity threats. It facilitates threat announcements, alerts, and updates from the U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team and other agencies. It has ties to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies, providing federal support to deal with and counter cyberattacks from nation-state actors.

The LS-ISAO is a part of the Global Resilience Federation, a relatively new non-profit organization that was launched as a “community of communities” to share cybersecurity info across multiple industries and security organizations. Its legal arm has parallel organizations in the energy and finance sectors.

Check it out. It probably isn’t cheap to belong to, but the alternative is the potential to completely lose your business. As “they” say, every law firm should belong to this organization.
