Linda Mikula, who serves as assistant to the executive director at The Mahoning County Bar Association, her husband Mark and sons Nicholas and Dominic recently traveled to New York City to attend a reception at the art gallery where Mikula’s work is on display.

The Austintown Township resident is one of many artists whose creations appear in the invitational show, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” at the Pleiades Gallery on W. 25th Street in Chelsea.

The reception took place on July 14, just three days after the show opened to the public.

Mikula is showcasing three pieces, including two pen-and-ink drawings and an acrylic painting entitled, “Tropical Tribute.”

“I enjoyed meeting people at the show,” said Mikula. “Some inquired as to what the inspiration was behind the artwork I had there.

“Ellen Bradshaw, the president of the gallery, was very welcoming,” Mikula said. “I was impressed with the show’s diversified works in various mediums. It was well organized and care was given to showcase each artist’s work.”

“It was really awesome,” said her husband Mark. “I was so proud of Linda. It’s the coolest thing ever when you have a dream and then you get to see it become a reality as she did.”

“It was very nice and I had a good time,” said her younger son Dominic. “I liked the way it was set up and enjoyed meeting some of the artists.”

“Seeing my mom’s art in New York was pretty amazing,” said her son Nicholas. “When we were kids, I used to watch her create pieces all the time, but she never got much recognition for it.

“It was great to see her work being appreciated by visitors to the gallery,” Nicholas said. “She worked really hard to take care of us and it was nice that we got a chance to show up for her at an important moment in her life.”

In addition to her immediate family, Mikula’s cousins Mary Rachel, Amira, Xavier and David Austin traveled to New York from Cherry Hill, New Jersey to surprise her at the reception.

Born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, Mikula grew up on the west side of Youngstown and graduated from Chaney High School.

Prior to beginning her job at The Mahoning County Bar Association as assistant to executive director Renee Kenneally in July 2017, Mikula worked for a variety of businesses, doing bookkeeping, providing customer service and handling administrative and office management duties.

She started creating art as a child, later studying commercial art at the school now known as the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center.

Mikula currently works in various mediums, including oils, pen-and-ink, charcoal, watercolors and acrylics.

Her work has appeared in a number of places over the years, including in the Butler Institute of American Art’s Regional Artist Directory as well as at an art show at the newly renovated Peter Allen Inn & Event Center in Kinsman, Ohio.

She continues to create freelance art and poetry.

Her latest poem, “Moving On” will be included in Eber & Wein Publishing’s “Best Poets of 2018.”

“I was so happy to be able to have this wonderful experience and travel to New York City with my family and be included among many fine artists at the gallery,” said Mikula.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” concludes at the Pleiades Gallery tomorrow.
