It’s a time of transition for former Akron Bar Association President Margaret (Meg) Andreeff Matejkovic as she settles into her new role as immediate past president of the bar association and embarks on a different chapter in her legal career as of counsel at the management-side labor and employment law firm Kastner Westman & Wilkins (KWW).
The former sole practitioner started at the firm on June 12.
“It’s a wonderful fit,” said Andreeff Matejkovic. “As a sole practitioner I represented employers in such matters as workplace investigations, training and policy writing. I also worked with clients on implementing preventative and proactive measures to help them avoid lawsuits and other problems.
“Joining KWW will allow me to continue to build upon my practice, which will benefit my clients, and use my skill set to assist the firm’s clients,” she said.
A native of Akron, Andreeff Matejkovic graduated from Firestone High School.
She received her bachelor’s degree in business and organizational communication and her juris doctorate from The University of Akron.
Andreeff Matejkovic said she first became interested in employment law as an undergraduate, while working for National City Bank (now part of PNC Bank) in various human resources capacities.
She also held management positions at Falls Savings Bank and its successor Fifth Third Bank, served as director of alumni/development at The University of Akron School of Law and did a stint as a human resources professional at the Cleveland Health Network, part of the Cleveland Clinic.
In 1998, she joined Millisor & Nobil (now part of Fisher Phillips) as an associate, where she handled litigation and also worked with employers to implement preventative measures similar to what she is doing now. In addition to training and other proactive work, she also developed affirmative action plans and conducted employee opinion surveys to understand and address worker and management concerns.
When she left in 2005 to take on the role of associate dean for external programs at Akron Law, she was a partner at the firm.
In 2013, she opened Matejkovic Law in Richfield to continue her focus on assisting employers.
Andreeff Matejkovic, who lives in Copley with her husband John, also an attorney and an associate professor at The University of Akron College of Business Administration, said operating as a sole practitioner had become “a bit lonely.
“While I was regularly on employer sites and dealing with people, I missed the day-to-day interaction with colleagues,” she said.
“Joining KWW is a bit of a homecoming for me since I am working with some of the same lawyers that I worked with at Millisor & Nobil. In addition, four of the KWW attorneys are former students of mine at Akron Law.”
In addition to her position at KWW, she continues to serve as an adjunct faculty member at Akron Law.
Kastner Westman & Wilkins Shareholder James Wilkins is among those who worked with Andreeff Matejkovic at Millisor & Nobil.
“Meg and I had lost touch,” said Wilkins. “But last fall, we ran into one another at a National Employment Law Institute CLE and that started the conversation that culminated in her joining us.
“KWW has always focused on the proactive side of labor and employment law,” said Wilkins. “We wanted to amp that up and we had been thinking of hiring a human resources consultant.
“Meg is so much more than that,” he said. “We saw an opportunity to strengthen our HR practice and have a lawyer capable of providing many other services, which we thought was awesome.”
